They found that men who were already taking nitroglycerin and taking blood pressure medicine for heart problems also were at increased risk for erectile dysfunction. They found that this increased risk was more pronounced among those who took Viagra, and men who took Viagra were also more likely to develop erectile dysfunction.
Researchers were also able to identify which medications were being used, and to determine whether they were associated with an increased risk of erectile dysfunction.
They found that those who were already taking nitroglycerine and taking blood pressure medicine were also at a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction, and this was not observed among men who were already taking Viagra.
“This study shows that the high cost of erectile dysfunction drugs can be a serious health problem,” said Dr. Nisreen Bhattacharyya, a urology researcher at University of California San Francisco who is also involved with the study. “We are concerned about the fact that erectile dysfunction is a chronic condition and men with a history of diabetes and heart disease can be at increased risk.”
The researchers found that men who already took nitroglycerine and taking blood pressure medicine for heart problems also were at an increased risk for developing erectile dysfunction, and that this was not observed among men who were already taking Viagra. The researchers also noted that men who were already taking blood pressure medicine and who were already taking Viagra were also more likely to develop erectile dysfunction.
“It’s important to note that the overall study population included people who had been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction,” said Bhattacharyya.
The researchers said they did not know whether the drug was causing the risk for erectile dysfunction in men. However, they did say that men who were already taking nitroglycerine and taking blood pressure medicine for heart problems were also at an increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction. This was the group of men who were already taking Viagra.
“This is an important finding, because this study is important because it shows that men who already take Viagra and who were already taking nitroglycerine and taking blood pressure medicine were also at an increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction,” said Bhattacharyya.
The new study will be published in the journal, an online publication of the U. S. National Institutes of Health.
“This is a major public health concern,” said Dr. Nisreen Bhattacharyya, director of the Institute for Health Care Policy. “I am concerned that this study may not be able to take full effect in the future, and I believe it has been shown to be true.”
Bhattacharyya, who is also professor of urology at the University of California San Francisco, said the new study shows that the high cost of erectile dysfunction drugs can be a serious health problem.
